Playa del Carmen has hundreds restaurants

From natural juice bars to Argentinean meat feast, you can find almost any food you desire

When you don't feel like cooking you own culinary masterpeice in the condo, Playa del Carmen is rich in dinning choices.  Just three minute’s walk from Condo Vida Dulce is 5th Avenue, a mile long, cobblestone pedestrian walkway colored with lively cantinas and charming yet inexpensive restaurants, and unlimited shopping.

Also, don't hesitate to venture off 5th Avennue and explore other options. Some of the best Mexican food I have ever had were an order of Tacos de Pollo for less than a dollar... just two blocks off 5th where the same meal might have been 10 times as much.

Also, there are dozens of places that sell very inexpensive pizza by the slice, the pie and will deliver.

Below are a few links and tips that we have found useful while looking for food in Playa del Carmen.

"The restaurant that was born with the town," proclaims the sign. This is also the restaurant locals recommend for seafood. It's right on the beach, with the water practically lapping at the foundations. Because the owners are fishermen, the fish is so fresh it's practically still wiggling. The wood hut doesn't look like much, but you can have your fish prepared in any of several ways. If you haven't tried the Yucatecan specialty tik-n-xic fish (with achiote and bitter-orange sauce, cooked in a banana leaf), this would be a good place to do so. Tarraya is on the beach opposite the basketball court. It serves a set breakfast menu that includes hot cakes, French toast, and eggs any style.

This new arrival to Playa offers some of the best of both Old and New Worlds. What I tried was delicious--chicken in a wonderfully scented sauce of fine herbs accompanied by fettuccine, and a well-made tortilla soup listed as sopa mexicana. There are a number of cool and light dishes that would be appetizing for lunch or an afternoon meal; for example, an avocado stuffed with shrimp and flavored with a subtle horseradish sauce on a bed of alfalfa sprouts and julienne carrots--a good mix of tastes and textures. This is an upstairs restaurant under a large and airy palapa roof.

The owner-chef here has come up with an outstanding, eclectic menu that favors grilled seafood, sautés, and pasta dishes with inventive combinations of ingredients. Everything I had was quite fresh and prepared beautifully, taking inspiration from various culinary traditions--Italian, Mexican, and Japanese. Keep an eye on the daily specials. The open-air restaurant also makes sandwiches and salads, black bean quesadillas, and crepes. The decor is primitive-tropical chic.

A beach restaurant where you can wiggle your toes into the sand, sip a beer, and chow down on a large burger and fries--what's not to like? The food is dependably good. Menu items include fajitas, peel-your-own Cajun-flavored shrimp with U.S.-style tartar sauce, hamburgers, hot dogs, quesadillas, beer, wine, and coffee. Daily specials include such dishes as grilled steaks, shrimp al ajillo, and pork chops.

The menu here makes use of many native foods and spices to produce a style of cooking different from what you usually get when ordering Yucatecan food. You find such things as a cream of chaya (a native leafy vegetable), or xcatic chile stuffed with cochinita. I also like the classic fruit salad, done Mexican style with lime juice and dried powdered chile. The menu is varied and includes a lot of seafood dishes, and the ones I had were fresh and well prepared.

The predominantly Italian crowd filling the tables here is a telling sign that the food is authentic and delicious. Entrees cover a range of homemade pasta and northern Italian specialties, with seafood prominently featured. There's an admirable selection of wines, and the espresso is exceptional. The ambience is lively and sophisticated.

One of the most popular restaurants in town, this place has an open-air dining area where the aroma of grilling meats permeates the air. The chicken fajitas fill the plate. Grilled lobster is also on the menu. The cooks do a good job with Mexican standards such as tortilla soup, enchiladas, and quesadillas. Mariachis show up around 8pm; if you want to avoid them and dine in relative tranquillity, get a table on the upper terrace in back.
